Sweepstakes Café Industry to Be Heavily Regulated After All
Pending house bill HB 7, which would severely restrict the economic incentives for sweepstakes café operators, recently stalled in the Ohio Senate. The bill faced challenges as some state senators questioned whether a more hospitable treatment for sweepstakes cafes was warranted. Ending speculation about the viability of ongoing operations, Ohio Senate President Keith Faber announced today that the Senate will pass HB 7 and seek to limit or eliminate the sweepstakes café industry in Ohio. The Senate is expected to pass HB 7 within 60 days, at which point the bill will go to Governor Kasich’s office for his signature.
