Weather Boosts Gambling Revenues
An unusually mild December helped increase revenues at 9 of Ohio’s 11 gaming facilities. Hollywood Toledo led the charge among the casinos – its December revenues of $16.8 million represented an 11.3% increase over last year. Hollywood Columbus revenues of $18.2 million were up 5.2%. Horseshoe Cincinnati saw its revenues ($17.7 million) increase 4%. Horseshoe Cleveland had the highest revenues for December ($18.8 million), but that was an 11.7% decline over last year.
Belterra Park saw the greatest percentage increase. The $5.9 million in December revenues was a 20.4% increase over last year. Hard Rock Rocksino generated the most revenue. The $18.9 million, an all-time high since the racino opened was a 19.6% increase over last year. Scioto Downs was up 14.3% ($12.8 million) and Hollywood Mahoning Valley was up 8.3% ($7.8 million). Thistledown, in the midst of renovations, experienced a 6.6% decline ($8.5 million) over last year.
The racinos continue to exceed expectations. The state’s seven racinos brought in a combined $831 million in revenue for all of 2015. This represents a 28% increase over 2014, when not all of the facilities were open. Meanwhile, the four casinos continue to underperform. While the $81.2 million in revenue in 2015 was a 1.3% increase over 2014, it was 42% less than what was projected in 2012.
