Gambling Issue on Green Ballot
Rock Ohio Caesars has shown interest in relocating its Thistledown racetrack from North Randall to property owned by the Akron-Canton Airport in Green, Ohio. A deal between Rock Ohio Caesars and the state would allow the track to be relocated within 12 miles of the airport if it chooses.
Gaming opponents argued that relocation to Green is a decision for the entire community, not one or two people, and have pursued a ballot issue which would ban gaming in Green. Organizers submitted 1,191 signatures to get the issue on the November ballot. A total of 901 signatures were needed, and 1,040 signatures were validated. As a result, voters in the city of Green will decide in November whether or not to ban casino gambling and horse racing.
Even if relocation does occur, it won’t be for quite some time. Rock Ohio Caesars has announced an $88 million makeover for the existing facility in North Randall. Included in the upgrade:
- 1,150 VLTs
- A new restaurant, two food court offerings, and a couple of lounges
- Repairs to the 2,300-space parking lot
- Upgrade to the existing restaurant that overlooks the track
The new racino is expected to open at the current Thistledown location in North Randall next spring.
